För att det visade sig att hon också hade schizofreniproblem...hon var själv en del av charlie? Det är min teori...tillsammans med andra som förklarar bättre än mig.
"I think the Charlie character was part of both Emily and De Niro psyche and they were both suffering from split personality. This means that they were both doing the crazy things.
1)There was a scene where Emily used a big bug as fishing bait to her fathers disgust so she showed signs of cruelty.
2)The writing on the bathroom walls was Emilys writing.
3)She drew a picture of the policemans death before he died.
4)The picture emily draws of woman in bath could have been of the girlfriend not the mum meaning Emily knows she will die.
Also if Charlie was existing purely from the father, why when De Niro is accusing her of doing awful things and screaming at her to tell him who Charlie is. Why doesn't she just say "you're Charlie". This is because Emily is acting as Charlie at times too. Both father and daughter see Charlie as a real physical being seperate from themselves. "
