Elevated body adiposity and metabolic consequences of obesity exerts a systematic influence on muscle characteristics, notably on muscle performance, composition, and size. Obese individuals have a greater absolute muscle strength than nonobese persons, which is normalized, or decreased in some persons, when fat-free mass compartment is considered. Muscle mass adapts to weight gain, but it declines most of the time when obesity is installed. This is related to impairments of anabolic abilities, illustrated notably by a lower anabolic response to nutrients. Modification of typology is also a feature of obesity characterized by decrease in type 1 fibers proportion and an increase in type 2 fibers, due to metabolic disorders and mechanical constraints specific of obesity. Thus, in obesity or in chronic overfeeding, the quality of muscle is affected affecting abilities to perform daily activities, physical exercise and lead to increase sedentary behavior and disability of obese individuals.
