Older and younger men completed 12 weeks of resistance training and ingested either 500 mL of chocolate milk or placebo daily. Training increased strength in both age groups (p < 0.05), with no supplementation effect. Type I muscle fibre area increased with training (p = 0.008) with no effect of age or supplementation. Type II fibre area increased (p = 0.014) in young men only with no supplementation effect. Chocolate milk did not enhance skeletal muscle hypertrophy following training.
Appl Physiol Nutr Metab. 2014 Oct 16:1-4. Daily chocolate milk consumption does not enhance the effect of resistance training in young and old men: a randomized controlled trial.

Experimental design
Participants completed 12 weeks of whole-body supervised RT
thrice weekly and were randomized to daily consumption of ei-
ther 500 mL of 1% chocolate milk (energy: 320 kcal, protein: 14 g,
fat5g,carbohydrate:54g)oraplacebobeverage(energy:3 10kcal,
protein: 0.4 g, fat 5 g, carbohydrate: 66 g) for the duration of the
study.Participantsconsumed500mLoftheirdesignatedbe verage
immediately (<15 min) after RT on training days and with break-
fast on nontraining days. The placebo beverage was designed to
look and taste as similar as possible to chocolate milk and was
administered in identical translucent containers. Participants
were asked not to discuss their beverage with each other. Partici-
pants were familiarized with the RT protocol and testing equip-
ment and then underwent strength testing to determine their
single repetition maximum (1RM) testing after a minimum of 72 h
following their last RT bout. 1RMs were assessed for leg press, leg
extension, and chest press as well as a 3 maximal voluntary iso-
metric knee extensions at a 90° knee angle on an isokinetic dyna-
mometer(Biodex,Shirley,N.Y.,USA).At72hafterthe1RMt esting,

cle after an overnight fast. Similarly, following completion of the
12 weeks, participants repeated 1RM testing 72 h after their final
RT session and then upon 72 h of rest underwent a second muscle
biopsy in the fasted state in the contralateral leg
