lim q->0 P(pf | har en flicka som heter Emma) = 1/2
lim q->0 P(pf | har en flicka som heter Emma) = 1/2

Hur vanligt namnet är spelar ingen roll.

Conclusion: The probability that, knowing the name of one child in a family of two, the other one child is of the same gender has nothing to do with the rarity of the name, unless the crazy possibility of identical names in a family is assumed (and if somebody insists that this can happen, he/she is invited to calculate more realistic probabilities that take into account male/female asymmetry and genetic correlations; also the possibility of identical names of children coming from previous marriages are implicitly excluded in this kind of puzzles, that usually talk of “a lady having two children. . . ”). Moreover, what matters is not the knowledge of the name, but rather something that allows us to point to him/her as ‘that one’.

Mr. Smith is the father of two. We meet him walking along the street with a young boy whom he proudly introduces as his son. What is the probability that Mr. Smith's other child is also a boy?
Bar-Hillel & Falk use this variant to highlight the importance of considering the underlying assumptions. The intuitive answer is
1/2
and, when making the most natural assumptions, this is correct. However, someone may argue that "…before Mr. Smith identifies the boy as his son, we know only that he is either the father of two boys, BB, or of two girls, GG, or of one of each in either birth order, i.e., BG or GB. Assuming again independence and equiprobability, we begin with a probability of
1/4
that Smith is the father of two boys. Discovering that he has at least one boy rules out the event GG. Since the remaining three events were equiprobable, we obtain a probability of
1/3
for BB."[4]
The natural assumption is that Mr. Smith selected the child companion at random. If so, as combination BB has twice the probability of either BG or GB of having resulted in the boy walking companion (and combination GG has zero probability, ruling it out), the union of events BG and GB becomes equiprobable with event BB, and so the chance that the other child is also a boy is
1/2
. Bar-Hillel & Falk, however, suggest an alternative scenario. They imagine a culture in which boys are invariably chosen over girls as walking companions. In this case, the combinations of BB, BG and GB are assumed equally likely to have resulted in the boy walking companion, and thus the probability that the other child is also a boy is
1/3
.

Tackar!

"The weak points of the previous evaluations, that lead to table 7, with all its consequences, are the conditional probabilities P(YN|Ef, EN, Yf, I2) and P(YN|Ef, EN, Yf, I2), for which we assumed intuitively the values r and (1−r), as if the information that the eldest child is a girl with a name different from N did not change the probability of the name of the other girl. This intuition, roughly but not exactly correct, is due to the fact that we tend to consider r small (any modern population has a large amount of possible feminine names) such that the assumption that a girl has any name but the particular one (N) does not change sizably the probability of the name of the other girl. "
Så även enligt den spelar namnet roll.

I try here to discuss the problem from scratch, showing that the rarity of the name plays no role, unless the strange assumption of two identical names in the same family is taken into account
