I came across an interesting randomized controlled trial in healthy humans that supplemented with omega-3 for 8 weeks. The omega-3 increased several species of beneficial gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate including Bifidobacterium, Lachnospira, Roseburia, and Lactobacillus. An increase in short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria such as Bifidobacterium has been shown to reduce mucosal inflammatory tone in the gut. It is not so surprising that omega-3 lowers inflammation in the gut but it is a bit of a surprise that it does so through changing the composition of the gut microbiome in a way that increases butyrate-producing bacteria.
