In official statement through their official website, PRIDE promoter Dream Stage Entertainment has made official their first match-up for the upcoming Open Weight Grand Prix to be held at Osaka Dome in May 5th.

Despise previous report from DSE official expressing no interest in matching former pro boxer turned MMA fighter Nishijima Yousuke against a grappler due to the risk factor of placing Yousuke's limited ground game against a more experienced mat technician, DSE has once again shocked the MMA community by announcing the official match up between Yousuke and fellow countryman, judoka and 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist, Hidehiko Yoshida.

Furthermore, Nishijima has said that if Hidehiko Yoshida wears his judo gi in the ring, he would like to wear his boxing gloves in the ring. He has submitted his request to DSE, and DSE President Nobuyuki Sakakibara is currently mulling over the possibility. Sakakibara said that while boxing gloves are not part of MMA, PRIDE has seen rule modifications before, in fights such as Royce Gracie versus Kazushi Sakuraba. He will contemplate the idea, and discuss it with the rest of DSE, Yoshida, and television broadcasters.

On the topic of Fedor Emelianenko, Sakakibara confirmed that the champion would not be able to fight in May. However, he did say that Emelianenko may be ready in time to fight in July. The idea of seeding Emelianenko in the second round is being discussed, with only fourteen fighters competing in the opening round in May. Sakakibara said that because Emelianenko has shown such strength in his past fights, he is worthy of a first round bye, justifying the possible second round seeding.

Crocop News

Mirko Cro Cop Filipović gave an huge interview for today (Sunday April 9th) edition of croatian papers «Sportske Novosti», the article is titled «I'll celebrate winning of the GP belt on my birthday»

Note: This interview has been translated.

About his physical condition?
- What can I say – to have problems here or to feel the pain there – so my opponent could use this informations and hit me right on the spot – No way - I feel fine, I'm 100% fit and ready.

How do you prepare for the fight?
- I'm working on my own program, I watched my opponents previous fights, and I was speciall focused on his last fight – every fighter is different, with a different style and fighting habits – I'm studying all this plus I'm picking my sparring partners to be as close to my opponent as possible.

Who is in charge for all the arrangements in Cro Cop Team?
- Zvonimir Lučić Cuki is in charge for the logistic, but I negotiate my fights and contracts, after all my head is on plate here.

What this Pride FC OWGP means to Cro Cop?
- I'll put all of me to win the GP belt. Too bad that Fedor won't participate. In my opinion Pride GP belt is harder to win than regular Pride belt, cause of tournament system, you must beat 4 top fighters in a row, last 2 in the same night. I can't imagine anything more demanding than this.

Weight divisions are merged into one here, how do you feel about that?
- It's basic principle of MMA: go to the ring and show how good you are. Someone is bigger, someone is smaller, but history showed us that size isn't the determing factor always, there are others virtues that matters like quickness, skills, technique... that's the magic of our sport

Like Minowa who's 175cm/83kg and still managed to beat Giant Silva who's 218cm/175kg in his last fight. Mirko you're in 32year of your life, how long we'll be watching you in the ring fighting?
- It's more mental stuff than anything. Fights could last just a few seconds or minutes but trainings and preparations are taking your time and energy the most. Coleman is a hard opponent in his 42, but optimal time for retirement is around 35, maybe body will be ready for more – but mentally I'm not so sure.

Ages ago you said that you'll hang yourself on the hightest pillar in your hometown Vinkovci if you fail to become the champion, what do you think now?
- I must admit last year I was pretty much out of focus, all of us got our ups & downs in life. I sincirely believe that I can win the belt this year, I think that all the jinxes are behind me now. But you also need a bit of luck in MMA, like Fedor had against Fujita or against Randleman. I'm focused on my goal and it's time for me to have some luck too. Grand finale of this year is on 10th of September – exactly on my birthday - symbolic or not....

You had 2 opportunites to take the title belt so far?
- Easy come – easy go, I wanna erase this from my memory, life goes on

Is it possible your cooperation with Ante Kostelić (ski-trainer and specialist for physical preparation of athletes, trainer and father of Janica Kostelić – the greatest world female skier)?
- I'd like to colaborate with him, but it looks impossible to set up our schedules.

Do you feel a fear when you entering the ring?
- No fear, maybe I'm more nervous than usually, but real fighters aren't afraid of getting hurt or beating. Defeat hurts more than anything. When I'm entering the ring I'm focused only on the fight, no matter of 6 or 60.000 people present in the hall

Is it true that one fighter should hate another?
- Nonsense, Why should I hate him? I have no emotions at all, ok I'd like to see him going down asap – but no hattery. We don't love each other – but also we certainly don't hate each other. All the fightes are normal people, sportsmen, athletes, but business is business.

How does you son Ivan looks on his daddy being in the ring?
- Like a game, he just a small kid, he's 3yrs old. He saws me on the TV and says «Daddy is boxing again», it's entertainment for him.

You've never asked for any kind of support from our (croatian) institutions, donations etc?
- I never asked anything and I won't in future. I provided enough: My blood - my money, there is a lot of people in Croatia who need the support more than me.

(Now in interview Mirko and the journalist are debating about our croatian domestic political problems – so I'm skipping that part.... as I'll skip journalist moronic question about Mirko fighting Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson under MMA rules)

Where will be Mirko once when he finishes his fighting career?
- I'd like to open a really great fighting center – best in Europe, with a number of gyms, fitness, weight-lifting. all for the athletes. It's gonna be a huge investment – we'll see if I'll be able to go thru with it. I'll be focused on working with young athletes, cause there are a lot of talents in Croatia.

Pride FC is spreading – there will be a gigantic event in LA in October, and in Japan – they have utmost respect for you, but in Croatia your chances to become the athlete of the year are minimal?
- Yes, cause MMA is not accepted in sport and media establishment in Croatia, still I know that half of our country can't wait to watch my next fight on TV. And about LA – I believe that I'll be there with my OWGP belt, of course.

Trevligt! Nu hittar man den här gamla tråden!

Roman Zentsov
http://www.prideofficial.com/free/news/img/photo_b/1146658112.jpg
- My condition is great. Just because I won via KO last times, doesn't mean I can do it again. I just want to give my best.
- I think Yvel is a great fighter. I don't know much beyond that. This time the opponent was decided a week before the match, so I didn't have time to do special training or anything. But I knew that he was a great competitor and I watched him on video even before the match was announced. So I have no worries. I trained hard for this fight and I want you guys to watch me fight.
- The training was in the mountains, jogging and running, of course sparring as well. Why the mountains? Hmm I don't know, Japanese people do mountain training more often so shouldn't you know?
- I do various training to make myself stronger mentally. I swam in icy lakes, swam through snow. I also train Russian style inside the sauna but the method is secret. To make myself stronger I chopped wood with axes and cut down trees with chainsaws. By training in nature I absorb nature's powers (someone's been smoking minowa's stash).
- I appreciate the fan support and I want to show for it. I want a fight a good fight, a beautiful fight, something that hopefully the fans will like.

Alistair
http://69.46.29.2:8080/absoluteig/gallery/Pride_2006_GP_Round_1/press/AlistairOvereem01PrideOWGPW.jpg
- My weight is around 101kg, same as last time. The Kharitonov fight was really great for me, watching back on the video I was really satisfied with my performance. I had no injuries, I finished the fight. I'm more of an all-round technician than HW fighters, and I'm faster than them too. I think that's my advantage over HW fighters.
- Werdum is good on the ground but eventually I'll win. After beating Werdum, I'd like to fight Mirko. It's easier for me to fight jiujitsu fighters. This time I'll keep it standing. Guillotine? Haha, I'll try my best.
- This match being against Werdum, I trained with a strong emphasis on my ground game. Also, Remy Bojansky is over at Calvin Gym right now so we're training together. Special training? Yeah, I have a special sparring partner. But I can't say who. It'll be a surprise so I'll reveal it after the match.
- This time I'm really well prepared. Champions are validated through fighting. This time I'm fighting with the same feeling as before, but I feel closer to the position of champ than before. Last time I showed Osaka fans a sub against Vitor, so this time I want to show them a KO victory.

Barnett
http://www.prideofficial.com/free/news/img/photo_b/1146658562.jpg
- I'm 115kg. I've been training hard since the last fight so I'm alot slimmer now. The training was hell. The aim was to shed the fat and increase the muscle, it would've been pointless if I got lighter as well. I personally think 112-118kg is best.
- I think that Aleks is young and hungry. His condition is good and he's growing rapidly as a fighter. I think it's because he doesn't have to worry about pressure or winning/losing. But this is my 37th fight, I've been fighting 10 years straight and after the Japan Tour I fought from Hokkaido to Fukuoka. I had great bouts with Schilt and Kondo. Aleks seems to me like he has a samurai-like do-or-die mentality, but I'm the same. I have confidence that I can focus on the victory, repel pressure, and win in convincing fashion.
- It's certain that Aleks is a dangerous fighter. He's big and he has punching power. But is he better at standing than Semmy Schilt whom I beat? Better at wrestling than Randy Couture? I spar with K-1 fighters and train with BJJ blackbelts. I certainly don't think Aleks is better than them at all of those things. Of course I'm not taking him lightly. I understand his strengths as well as his weaknesses.
- He won't give up and he won't break down. Nothing wrong with ending early but I want to finish it in the first round. Let's see, I will finish the fight in 7-8 minutes. And not only today, I want to finish all GP fights in 1R. Even my record til now 29 out of 30 wins have been within the first 10 minutes.
- I always go for the victory and I seriously go for prowrestler moves like power bombs. Last Nakamura fight I was going for it too, like the Nagata-Lock II. Aleks isn't very strong with someone on his back so if I get the back then I will go for a german suplex.
- How many kilos can I lift? I can lift Bob Sapp. I could do it to a 320 lb guy during training. I'm glad Aleks slimmed down, it's easier to throw. In Pride I can do Nagata-Lock II, reverse shrimp hold, Death Valley Bomb, Emerald Flowsion. I'll see what I can attempt depending on the situation and my opponent.
- If you ask me, there's not a huge difference between prowrestling and MMA (let the e-flaming begin). Moves for prowrestling and MMA aren't that different. MMA moves require risk too. Looking at Karl Gotch or Bill Robinson I still don't see much difference. At a basic level they are connected. But double arm suplexes and germans can't be used by just anybody. Only if you have acquired the skills like me can you use it.
- I want to use prowrestling moves to entertain the fans, and I also want to prove that prowrestling is the strongest. Just because it's the same rules, it's boring if you fight the same fight every time. I want to show the fans something only I can do. As a pro fighter, I want to do a fight where the fans are happy and excited.

Aleks
http://www.prideofficial.com/free/news/img/photo_b/1146658566.jpg
- I'm glad I'm able to participate in the biggest GP for Pride.
- Of course I did the special training camp this time with Fedor, Zentsov, and Mitskov coach at a town Kissabosk. To win I did various types of training, it was very productive and arduous. Fedor couldn't use his hands so we couldn't spar, but we jogged together and he gave me advice.
- Josh is a great, powerful fighter. Together we should be able to do a fantastic fight for the fans. I knew about him from way back. He's full of experience and can adjust his game according to the opponent, so it's an honor to fight him. But even though he has more experience, I want to prove on the ring who is the better fighter. One advantage I have, is that I'm the younger one, haha.
- It's hard to predict a sub or a KO. But I plan to finish the fight as early as possible.
- If I win the GP and happen to face my brother at the finals, well...we'll have to settle who is the strongest brother.

Nog
http://www.prideofficial.com/free/news/img/photo_b/1146658686.jpg
- I can't form a game plan until an opponent is decided but I was sure that I'll be in the GP so I trained as usual. I predicted my opponent to some degree so I wasn't really surprised.
- Zulu is big and has power. But since he's slow I want to beat him with my speed. The Japanese fans are really expecting me to be a huge favorite right? I think so too. I have a longer career than him, and I feel responsible as well. To fight a good match and not betray expectations. The recurrence of the Bob Sapp match? That probably won't happen. I'm a more evolved striker since then. But with Zulu it'll probably be a faster paced match.
- I have new techniques I acquired. I will try to show them in this fight, but I can't predict anything. What I'm aiming for is to finish the fight with strikes. Zulu is heavy so he's difficult to takedown. Of course there's a possibility it'll end up on the ground, but there will definitely be striking before that. I plan to fight mainly with strikes, and I don't mind being on the ground neither.
- I trained for 2 weeks away from Rio at Baiia (sp?) state. That was mainly for boxing. I felt that I needed more training in boxing, and also I trained hard to develop some muscles for boxing. In Baiia there is a gym run by Luiz Doria and always about 6 champs training there. Muay Thai I trained with Luiz Alvez as usual.
- Ever since the OW GP was announced I wanted to be the champ. This year's big goal. In 2004 I lost at the finals, but this year I feel is a big chance. I am always fighting with intensity, but this GP means alot to my career. I want to do my best. Other fighters probably have the same goal but I have the long career. I have pretty much more career than anyone competing this time. So I think I have a high possibility of winning.
- Of course in the finals I want to beat Fedor and become the champ. I fought with him three times. Once there was an accident and I thought I was winning up to that point. The other two I lost but that means he had a better game plan than me. Next time I want to prepare well and have good results.

ZULU
http://www.prideofficial.com/free/news/img/photo_b/1146658688.jpg
- I like Osaka, alot of people and very noisy too. I took alot of pictures of Osaka dome from my hotel room window. I don't really know much about Japan yet so after the match I want to look around and do some shopping.
- My condition is good. I trained well so now I just gotta go in there. Last Fedor match could have happened to anybody. No one can predict what will happen on the ring. For me it was very disappointing, but my dad is saying "I was shocked but it was a good lesson. We must train hard from now on."
- At first I was shocked about the loss but I found out that's how life is. I might lose today but I'll win tomorrow. That's life.
- After the fight I was in tears but my manager and coach told me "You don't have to feel so down." There will be different opportunities and maybe even a possibility for revenge, so I decided to keep my head up and not get so sad.
- Nogueira is Brazillian and very popular, he's a wonderful fighter. I think of myself as an employee of Pride so I feel it's my destiny to have a good match and win.
- My dad told me "Move faster and be more aggressive." For this match I did boxing training, as well as BJJ and wrestling. For BJJ I trained with a coach nicknamed "The Bulldog," Ricardo Gomez. He won in a big northern Brazillian BJJ tourney, and he won all 10 of his MMA fights as well.
- I'm being trained boxing from the ex-Brazil national team coach Rula (sp?), and for wrestling I'm being trained by the 2 time Brazillian Champion Antonio Diouge (sp?). I want to make the best of my chance.

- I'm very calm right now, I'm in the best condition I've ever been. This new hair style? I went a bit wild and modeled it after my nickname "Mega-punk." Don't worry about the trafic accident, miraculously I came out with light injuries and only had 11 stitches on my head.
- I've been watching Fujita (DVDs ofcourse) ever since the Shamrock fight. I respected him since then as a wonderful fighter. His best strength is that he is able to keep fighting. By giving himself pressure he is able to maximize his power and be strong mentally. In the Shamrock fight he showed determination to keep fighting til the end. That's my favorite fight. He kept fighting and never gave up. His takedown skills are impressive too. I watched that fight over and over (on DVDs) and was really moved by that fight.
- I want to break that Fujita heart. That's the only way to defeat him. In addition to physical damage, I will fight in a way to test his heart. It'll be a tough fight. But I'm determined to break his heart! I will win!
- I'm honored to be his return opponent, and I'm happy too. I'm nervous in a sense that it's a GP and I must advance, and it's an important fight in that respect. I sacrificed alot of things for this fight and trained hard. I am anxious to see the results in broad daylight.
- I trained at the ATT this time for a month. Before, Jeff Monson from ATT came to train at Team Trojan so when we talked, he invited me saying they had alot of big sparring partners there. Right when I went Aurelio came back from Japan and was ecstatic that he won against Gomi. He taught me choke and countering techniques.
- I will win this fight, train back home, and become an even better fighter. I can't wait to show the Japanese fans what I'll be. I promise that on May 5th there will be a war on the ring.

- It's a GP so I am psyching myself to win the first round. My tension is high. I want to win one at a time and get to the championship.
- Thompson has amazing power, speed, and explosiveness. I'm the favorite? Nonsense! That power is amazing. He has amazing pressure and an unbelievable strength. Gong and Dash? He won't necessarily do it. I'm not thinking about the details like takedown and whatnot.
- I trained at Marco Ruas' gym again. I did everything. His gym teaches you alot from Marco's own experiences so you learn alot. They train you mentally as well. I did the usual striking and ground game but occasionally we would climb trees and mountains or swim in rivers, it's really a focused mentality.
- Pride is a bigger event than when I was in it, it's huge now. It's not like I didn't do anything these three years, I want to use what I did these past years and test myself to see how far I can go. How much can I push myself to the limit? The possibilities are endless, it's just up to me to get to those heights.
- I want to live like Sakakibara. That life is like a dream, it's important to have hope like that. It's like he conquered the world of martial arts tournaments. I want to have a successful life like Sakakibara.
