Both whey protein (WP) and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) have been shown to be effective in promoting recovery following resistance training, although via different mechanisms. As a result, there may be an additive effect if the two supplements are used in conjunction.

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this study was to compare WP with EAS™ Recovery Protein (RP) containing whey protein, HMB and a slow release carbohydrate (waxy maize), at promoting the recovery process.

METHODS:

13 men (age: 22.6±3.9 years; height: 175.3±12.2cm; weight: 86.2±9.8kg) completed a cross-over, counterbalanced, double-blind design. Subjects ingested RP or WP alone twice daily for 2 weeks prior to, during, and for 2 days following a 3 day workout sequence. Following a 2 week washout,
subjects repeated the sequence with the alternate treatment. The workout sequence began with a heavy resistance exercise workout on day (3-5RM, 3m inter-set rest) followed by 2 consecutive days (days 2 and 3) of metabolic resistance exercise workouts (8-10RM, 30s inter-set rest). The subjects performed no physical activity during days 4 and 5. The effectiveness of each treatment was assessed by physical performance tests, muscle damage markers in the blood and muscle soreness questionnaires. Measurements were taken at baseline, before and following each workout and on days 4 and 5.
RESULTS:

Interleukin-6 was lower for the RP treatment on days 4 (RP: 1.2±0.2 vs. WP: 1.6±0.6 pg/ml, p≤0.05) and 5 (RP: 1.1±0.2 vs. WP: 1.6±0.4 pg/ml, p≤0.05). Creatine Kinase was lower for the RP treatment on days 2 (RP: 166.9±56.4 vs. WP: 307.1±125.2 IU/L, p≤0.05), 4 (RP:232.5±67.4 vs. WP: 432.6±223.3 IU/L, p≤0.05) and 5 (RP: 176.1 ±38.7 vs. 264.5±120.9 IU/L, p≤0.05). Muscle soreness was lower for RP treatment on day 4 (RP: 2.0±0.7 vs. WP: 2.8±1.1cm, p≤0.05). Vertical jump power was higher for the RP treatment on days 4 (RP: 5983.2±624 vs. WP 5303.9±641.7 W, p≤0.05) and 5 (RP: 5792.5±595.4 vs. WP: 5200.4±501 W, p≤0.05).

CONCLUSION:

The addition of HMB and waxy maize to whey protein is able to provide additional benefits to the recovery process, evidenced by a reduction in muscle damage markers, soreness and an improvement in athletic performance. Despite the prolific

Minskade nivåer av interleukin-6 behöver ju nödvändigtvis inte vara gynnsamt för muskeltillväxt dock, med tanke på att tillväxt är en inflammatorisk process i sig.
