Power outputs didn't significantly change at any time point, although there was a trend for reduction in power output two days following the exercise only when sauna therapy was used. The authors conclude that sauna therapy following exercise may actually decrease performance two days following the training session.

This study investigated the effects of hot (H) and room temperature (RT) recovery environments on glycogen resynthesis. Nine male participants completed two trials, cycling for 1 h in a temperature-controlled chamber (32.6 degrees C), followed by 4 h of recovery at 32.6 degrees C (H) or 22.2 degrees C (RT). Rectal temperature was continuously recorded. A carbohydrate beverage (1.8 g/kg bodyweight) was supplied at 0 and 2 h post-exercise. Muscle biopsies were taken immediately, 2 h, and 4 h post-exercise for glycogen analysis. Blood samples were taken at 30, 60, 120, 150, 180, and 240 min into recovery for glucose and insulin analysis. Expired gas was collected at 105 min and 225 min into recovery to calculate whole body carbohydrate oxidation. Average core temperature, whole body carbohydrate oxidation, and serum glucose at 120, 150, 180 and 240 min was higher in H compared to RT (p<0.05). Muscle glycogen was higher in RT vs. H at 4 h (105+/-28 vs. 88+/-24 mmol.kg (-1) wet weight, respectively; p<0.05), but no different at 0 and 2 h. There was no difference in serum insulin. These data indicate the importance of minimizing the exposure to heat after exercise to improve recovery, specifically to improve glycogen resynthesis.

Lokal värmeterapi verkar dock ge ökad styrka och muskelmassa.

The present study was performed to investigate the effects of long-term heat stress on mass, strength and gene expression profile of human skeletal muscles without exercise training. Eight healthy men were subjected to 10-week application of heat stress, which was performed for the quadriceps muscles for 8 h/day and 4 days/week by using a heat- and steam-generating sheet. Maximum isometric force during knee extension of the heated leg significantly increased after heat stress (~5.8%, P < 0.05). Mean cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of vastus lateralis (VL, ~2.7%) and rectus femoris (~6.1%) muscles, as well as fiber CSA (8.3%) in VL, in the heated leg were also significantly increased (P < 0.05). Statistical analysis of microarrays (SAM) revealed that 10 weeks of heat stress increased the transcript level of 925 genes and decreased that of 1,300 genes, and gene function clustering analysis (Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery: DAVID) showed that these regulated transcripts stemmed from diverse functional categories. Transcript level of ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase binding protein (UQCRB) was significantly increased by 10 weeks of heat stress (~3.0 folds). UQCRB is classified as one of the oxidative phosphorylation-associated genes, suggesting that heat stress can stimulate ATP synthesis. These results suggested that long-term application of heat stress could be effective in increasing the muscle strength associated with hypertrophy without exercise training.

Gäller det motsatta? Dvs att kalla omgivningar förbättrar. Alltid tänkt att isbad efter träning är broscience, men vad vet jag.
