What Are Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA'S)?

Branch Chain Amino Acids are the "Building Blocks" of the body. They make up 35% of your muscle mass and must be present for molecular growth and development to take place. Eight are essential (cannot be manufactured by the body) the rest are non-essential (can be manufactured by the body with proper nutrition). Besides building cells and repairing tissue, they form antibodies, they are part of the enzyme & hormonal system; they build RNA and DNA and they carry oxygen throughout the body.

Proteins are made up of amino acids. The difference between full spectrum amino acids and regular protein powders is that protein powders have fillers, sweeteners, dyes and extra carbohydrates. More than 20 amino acids are needed to build muscle, red blood cells, and hundreds of other molecules that sustain life. Your body can produce all but 8-10 amino acids which must be obtained through your diet or supplementation. A complete amino acid profile is needed by your body to reach your maximum fitness potential.

The Function Of BCAA'S

They act as nitrogen carriers which assist the muscles in synthesizing other amino acids needed for anabolic muscle action. In simpler terms, BCAA's combine simpler amino acids to form a complex whole muscle tissue. In this action, BCAA's stimulate production of insulin, the main function of which is to allow circulating blood sugar to be taken up by the muscle cells and used as a source of energy. This insulin production promotes amino acid uptake by the muscle.

How Do BCAA'S Work?

During intense weight training the body is normally in a highly catabolic condition. At this time glycogen stores are being rapidly depleted and the liver in turn must synthesize glucose by a conversion of L-Alanine. Alanine makes up over half of the amino acid content released from muscles during exercise.

The release of BCAA's is generally recognized as the signal to the body to stop protein syntheses in the muscles, especially during times of stress. Providing the Branch Chain Amino Acids, especially during those times of stress may profoundly affect this signal and allow protein synthesis to continue onward.

Important Co-Factors In BCAA Supplementation

As with most nutrition, many bodybuilders overlook the importance of combining and inclusion of co-factors when supplementing. Below is a list of supplements that play a part in increasing the effectiveness of BCAA supplementation.

Chromium: The most desired form is picolinate which functions to increase the effectiveness of insulin, a hormone composed of 91 amino acids, manufactured in the beta cells of the pancreas. Insulin is the most essential link in the muscle building chain. Chromium enhances the rate at which protein is synthesized by the body, and promotes intracellular uptake of free amino acids from the blood and assimilation by the cells. It retards the rate of protein degradation by the body within the cells. This is an absolute must to include in a quality Branch Chain Amino formula. Learn more about chromium.

Zinc/Vitamin B-6: Zinc is the regulator of insulin. The natural co factor to this element is Vitamin B-6. As Vitamin B-6 is an important intermediary in amino acid metabolism; those athletes whose diets are high in amino acids need additional amounts from the body. The transport of amino acids in the cellular interior is most dependant on an adequate supply of Vitamin B-6. Learn more about zinc.

Vitamin B-12: Another important water soluble nutrient that must be present in the protein metabolism and in the synthesis of amino acids.

Blotin: This all important member of the B family has an important role in protein synthesis and the manufacture of glycogen.

How Much and When Should You Take Amino Acids?

With BCAA's 4-8 grams before a work out and 4-8 grams after is optimal. Lesser amounts are effective but if increased performance and recovery are needed a higher dosage is more effective. Taking BCAA's immediately before or during a strenuous workout or cardio session will increase performance.

Taking them after with a post work out meal or recovery drink will help speed the replacement of BCAA's in the muscles, speeding muscle recovery and preventing overtraining. For optimum results in supplement form, it is desirable to take your BCAA's separately from the other amino acid groupings for the fact that they totally dominate the race for entry into the bodies' systems.

Conclusion

Branched Chain Amino Acids are among the most beneficial and effective supplements in any sports nutrition program. Although these supplements have been around for a long time and the scientific understanding in the exercise performance benefits of BCAA supplementation is rich, many people don't know exactly how they exert their effects or how vital BCAA supplementation is.

One thing is definitely sure though, that anyone who is looking to put on more muscle or gain more energy naturally without any side effects should very seriously consider taking BCAA's.

Branched chain amino acids
(Known as BCAA, Leucine, Valine, Isoleucine, Branched chain amino acids)

tickProtein source
tickMuscle Builder
tickAntioxidant
tickPart of the Amino Acid group
How does it work?
The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAAs are considered essential amino acids, because human beings cannot survive unless these amino acids are present in the diet. BCAAs are vital for the maintenance of muscle tissue and preserve muscle stores of glycogen (a storage form of carbohydrate that can be converted into energy) [1]. BCAAs also help prevent muscle protein breakdown during exercise [2]. Many endurance athletes (such as long-distance runners and cyclists) also use BCAA during exercise to strengthen their immune system and delay fatigue.

Who is it used for?
BCAAs help to delay fatigue during exercise, making them suitable for people taking part in sports such as distance running or cycling. Those involved in team sports, such as rugby, football or hockey will also benefit. The beneficial effect of BCAAs on muscle preservation and growth also makes them suitable for anyone wanting to lose fat without losing muscle.
How does it work?
During exercise, BCAAs are used up by your body as a fuel source. This leads to an increase in the levels of an amino acid called tryptophan. When tryptophan enters your brain, it leads to feelings of tiredness. Some experts believe that by supplementing with BCAAs during exercise, you can keep exercising at a higher pace for longer. Indeed, several studies show that BCAAs consumed during exercise has a beneficial effect on performance, reducing fatigue and raising energy levels [5, 6, 7]. There is also research showing that BCAAs improve recovery rates between exercise sessions. In one such study, 26 subjects took part in a 30-kilometer cross country race and another 32 subjects ran a full length marathon. In both races, the participants found that BCAAs improved physical performance and helped them recover more quickly.

A Brazilian research team has also shown that BCAAs can strengthen the immune system of elite triathletes [9]. Thirty days of supplementation was enough to reduce symptoms of infection by an impressive 34%. The group was given either six grams of BCAAs or a 'dummy' supplement thirty days before taking part in an Olympic triathlon. Endurance events typically require a high volume of training, and often involve multiple daily workouts, which can weaken the immune system. As such, any supplement offering protection against the ravages of training is something most athletes would find invaluable. The main finding of the study was that the reduced incidence of infection was linked to higher levels of glutamine in the triathletes supplementing with the BCAAs.

BCAA supplementation are also useful in special situations, such as preventing muscle loss at high altitudes and prolonging endurance performance in the heat [3, 4]. In one study, a group of 16 subjects participating in a 21-day trek at high altitude were divided in two groups. One group took BCAAs (5.76, 2.88 and 2.88 grams per day of leucine, isoleucine and valine, respectively) or a placebo. The BCAA group lost significantly less muscle than those using a placebo. Subjects using BCAA lost about 10% more fat compared to the group using the placebo. Arm muscle size tended to increase in the BCAA group, whereas there was a significant decrease of 6.8% in the placebo group. The same tendency was observed for the thigh muscles [3].

Dairy products and red meat contain the greatest amounts of BCAAs, although they are present in all protein-containing foods. Whey protein (particularly whey protein isolates rather than the cheaper concentrates) is especially rich in BCAAs, and has become a staple part of the diet for anyone wanting to build muscle. Because it helps to prevent the loss of muscle, whey protein is also used extensively during weight loss programmes.

Evidence for this comes from research carried in the International Journal of Sports Medicine [8]. Twenty-five competitive wrestlers were assigned to one of several groups. Each group followed a slightly different diet. One of the groups, however, consumed a diet that was high in BCAAs. After 19 days of low-calorie dieting, subjects using BCAAs lost the most weight and body fat.
How do I use it?
Approximately 3-5 grams of BCAAs can be taken during exercise (preferably with 30-50 grams of carbohydrate) to delay fatigue and improve exercise performance. Because of the high doses of BCAAs needed to preserve muscle, most experts recommend the use of several servings of whey protein per day instead of consuming BCAA capsules, as whey is very high in BCAAs.
What results can I expect?
Most users report an immediate improvement in performance during extended periods of exercise. Consumed for several months, a diet high in BCAA will reduce the incidence of infection. You can also expect faster muscle growth during periods of intense training, and less muscle loss when attempting to lose weight. To date, no side effects have been reported with the use of BCAAs.
What can it be combined with?
BCAAs work especially well at delaying fatigue when combined with carbohydrate and water, and consumed during exercise. Athletes involved in intense training often use several servings of whey protein each day (whey is high in BCAAs) day to prevent muscle loss and increase muscle gain.

Abstract

Leucine, isoleucine and valine, the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), make up about one-third of muscle protein. Of these, leucine has been the most thoroughly investigated because its oxidation rate is higher than that of isoleucine or valine. Leucine also stimulates protein synthesis in muscle and is closely associated with the release of gluconeogenic precursors, such as alanine, from muscle. Significant decreases in plasma or serum levels of leucine occur following aerobic (11 to 33%), anaerobic lactic (5 to 8%) and strength exercise (30%) sessions. In skeletal muscle, there is a decrease in leucine level and a reduction in glycogen stores during exhaustive aerobic exercise. Basal fasting serum leucine levels decrease by 20% during 5 weeks of speed and strength training in power-trained athletes on a daily protein intake of 1.26 g/kg bodyweight. The leucine content of protein is assumed to vary between 5 and 10%. There are suggestions that the current recommended dietary intake of leucine be increased from 14 mg/kg bodyweight/day to a minimum of 45 mg/kg bodyweight/day for sedentary individuals, and more for those participating in intensive training in order to optimise rates of whole body protein synthesis. Consumption of BCAA (30 to 35% leucine) before or during endurance exercise may prevent or decrease the net rate of protein degradation, may improve both mental and physical performance and may have a sparing effect on muscle glycogen degradation and depletion of muscle glycogen stores. However, leucine supplementation (200 mg/kg bodyweight) 50 minutes before anaerobic running exercise had no effect on performance. During 5 weeks of strength and speed training, leucine supplementation of 50 mg/kg bodyweight/day, supplementary to a daily protein intake of 1.26 g/kg bodyweight/day, appeared to prevent the decrease in the serum leucine levels in power-trained athletes. According to 1 study, dietary supplementation of the leucine metabolite beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) 3 g/day to humans undertaking intensive resistance training exercise resulted in an increased deposition of fat-free mass and an accompanying increase in strength. Muscle proteolysis was also decreased with HMB, accompanied by lower plasma levels of enzymes indicating muscle damage and an average 50% decrease in plasma essential amino acid levels. Furthermore, BCAA supplementation (76% leucine) in combination with moderate energy restriction has been shown to induce significant and preferential losses of visceral adipose tissue and to allow maintenance of a high level of performance. Caution must be paid when interpreting the limited number of studies in this area since, in many studies, leucine has been supplemented as part of a mixture of BCAA. Consequently, further research into the effects of leucine supplementation alone is needed.

Min EAA burk tar strax slut.

EAA's are best for bulking phases
BCAA's are best for cutting phases.

rdy set go

(Also, I didnt write this.)

Taken from View topic - Plates Chronicals.........Bcaa's vs. Eaa's. When & why. : Bodybuilding Forums and Fitness Forums by Prosource.net

"-BCAAs do not increase protein synthesis above basal levels, but they do decrease protein breakdown. They are very benificial while cutting and even may increase fat loss then. BCAAs seem to be the perfect supplement to use for people as a "midnight shake". It only gives you a few kcals. (20 kcal. since 5g will probably suffice) so you don't need to be afraid to gain fat mass compared to a midnight protein shake.

-**EAAs do increase protein synthesis above basal levels. This is what you want to use pre/post workout to increase muscle growth.

WHY BCAA'S FOR RECOVERY:
A) bcaas prevent protein breakdown, but do not increase protein synthesis.
B) Helps in fat loss while cutting.
C) Prevents a decrease in glutamine
D) Prevents muscle damage.

1)It is known that BCAA oxidation is promoted by exercise
2)Promotion of fatty acid oxidation upregulates the BCAA catabolism
3) 77 mg BCAAs/kg supplementation before exercise results in a large decrease in release of EAA, (531 +/- 70 mumol/kg) for BCAA vs. (924 +/- 148 mumol/kg) for control.
4) A cutting diet high in BCAAs increases body weight loss and % of fat loss more than a calorie restricted high protein cutting diet alone.
5)No toxic effects of BCAAs were observed at a dose of 2.5 g /kg for 3 mo or 1.25 g /kg for 1 y. There are no reports concerning BCAA toxicity in relation to exercise and sports at these levels.

***BCAAs prevent protein breakdown, but do not increase protein synthesis.

-Since 1978 a variety of studies have been performed in humans where BCAAs or leucine alone was administrated in varying amounts and durations. An anabolic effect of leucine and the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) on reduction of muscle protein breakdown was found in these studies, with no measured effect upon muscle protein synthesis. In addition, no untoward effects have been reported in any of these studies from infusion of the BCAAs at upward 3 times basal flux or 6 times normal dietary intake during the fed portion of the day.

-BCAA infusion in 10 post absorptive normal subjects causes a 4-fold rise in arterial BCAA levels. Plasma insulin levels were unchanged from basal levels. Whole-body phenylalanine flux, an index of proteolysis, was significantly suppressed by BCAA infusion. Despite the rise in whole-body non-oxidative leucine disposal, and in forearm leucine uptake and disposal, forearm phenylalanine disposal, an index of muscle protein synthesis, was not stimulated by infusion of branched-chain amino acids

-BCAAs during 1h cycle exercise and a 2h recovery period does not influence the rate of exchange of the aromatic AAs during exercise. In the recovery period, a faster decrease in the muscle concentration of aromatic AAs was found (46% compared with 25% in the placebo condition). There was also a tendency to a smaller release (an average of 32%) of these amino acids from the legs. The results suggest that BCAA have a protein-sparing effect during the recovery after exercise

-7.5-12 g BCAAs during intense exercise (a 30 km cross-country race and a full marathon) increases BCAA plasma and muscle concentration. In the placebo group plasma BCAA decreased and left muscle levels unchanged. The placebo group showed a 20-40% increase in the muscle concentration of aromatic AAs. BCAA supplementation prevented this increase in aromatic AAs in both muscle and plasma. These results suggest that an intake of BCAAs during exercise can prevent or decrease the net rate of protein degradation caused by heavy exercise

-77 mg BCAAs/kg supplementation before exercise resulted in a doubling (P < 0.05) of the arterial BCAA levels before exercise (339 +/- 15 vs. 822 +/- 86 microM). During the 60 min of exercise, the total release of BCAA was 68 +/- 93 vs. 816 +/- 198 mumol/kg (P < 0.05) for the BCAA and control trials, respectively. Furthermore, the increased intramuscular and arterial BCAA levels before and during exercise result in (???? thanks for finishing dude)

-BCAA supplementation (76% leucine) in combination with moderate energy restriction has been shown to induce significant and preferential losses of visceral adipose tissue and to allow maintenance of a high level of performance.

-In adipocytes from fed rats, the rate of fatty acid synthesis in the presence of glucose and insulin was inhibited 40% by valine (5 mm)

-Twenty-five competitive wrestlers restricted their caloric intake (28 kcal/kg per day) for 19 days. A high-BCAA diet provided 4 kg of weight loss, and 17.3% decrease in fat loss. There was no change in aerobic (VO2max) (p > 0.75) and anaerobic capacities (Wingate test) (p > 0.81), and in muscular strength (p > 0.82).

Prevents a decrease in glutamine
-Following an exercise bout, a decrease in plasma glutamine concentration can be observed, which is completely abolished by BCAA supplementation.

-BCAA supplementation during a triathlon completely prevents the decrease in plasma glutamine.......

Prevents muscle damage
-We hypothesized that BCAA supplementation would reduce the serum activities of intramuscular enzymes associated with muscle damage. 120 minutes exercise on a cycle ergometer significantly increases serum creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) up to 5d post-exercise.....

-12 g BCAAs for 14d in 16 men (the exercise on day 7) significantly reduces this change in LDH and CK .

WHY ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS (EAAs) FOR RECOVERY:
A) EAAs increase protein synthesis above basal levels
B) Prevents muscle soreness

1) Nonessential amino acids are not necessary for stimulation of net muscle protein balance (6 g EAAs provides double the response of 3g EAA and 3g of nonessentail AA)
2) 40g EAAs does not increase net protein balance more than 20g EAAs
3) Ingestion of oral essential amino acids results in a change from net muscle protein degradation to net muscle protein synthesis after heavy resistance exercise in humans similar to that seen when the amino acids were infused.

EAAs increase protein synthesis above basal levels in depth.
-EAAs (essential amino acids) increases net muscle protein balance. 2x a day 6 g provides double the response of 2x a day 3 g.....

-Consumption of 40g EAAs after heavy resistance training results in a change from net protein degradation (-50 +/- 23 nmol. min) to net protein synthesis (29 +/- 14 nmol. min).......

-A 0.15g/kg/hr AA infusion for 3 hours in 6 normal men increases muscle protein synthesis by 141%. After exerecise this increase is 291%. Muscle protein breakdown was not significantly affected.....

-Consumption of 6g EAA + 35g sucrose immediately before exercise elevates response of net muscle protein synthesis more than consumption following exercise. Total net phenylalanine uptake across the leg was greater during PRE (209 /42 mg) than during POST (81/ 19mg).

-6g EAA'S consumed at 1 and 2 hours after resistance exercise increases protein synthesis (total net uptake of phenylalanine across the leg) (71 +/- 13 mg x leg x 3hr). Prior intake of amino acids and carbohydrate does not diminish the metabolic response to a second comparable dose ingested 1h later

Eaa's Prevent muscle soreness in depth.
-3.6 g AA's before and after exercise + 2 doses a day for 4 days after the exercise suppresses the rise in serum creatine kinase activity. This also diminished muscle soreness.

There is a lot of scientific data here!
To conclude..... take Bcaa's for dieting due to muscle sparing properties..... great during extended intense exercise and at bedtime....... take Eaa's before and after resistance training to increase protein synthesis...... I personally take Eaa's thru purple wraath supplementation.....controlled labs is a wonderful product but by all means they do not have a corner on the market and there are many great Amino Acid supplements out there.
Either way Amino acids should be a staple in any serious weight trained athelete, there is far too much scientific data to dismiss use of the all mighty Amino Acid...... Do yourself a favor if you do not have them in your supp. regimine, then you better add em because they are quite frankley just that important!

I'm not sure why you'd want to supplement with EAA's - those are the same aminos that you get in abundance from eating lots of protein-packed foods. It seems like a waste of money for anyone whose diet can at least afford them enough calories to get in plenty of protein. As for BCAA's, they can be useful when dieting to prevent muscle loss, but they are very expensive.

Då kan man ju säga "I'm not sure why you'd want to supplement with BCAA's - those are the same aminos that you get in abundance from eating lots of protein-packed foods" också.

Providing the Branch Chain Amino Acids, especially during those times of stress may profoundly affect this signal and allow protein synthesis to continue onward.

BCAAs do not increase protein synthesis above basal levels, but they do decrease protein breakdown.

There has been considerable interest in the proposition that proteins of different biological quality and digestibility might be more or less efficient at supplying amino acids to muscle after exercise. Recent work by Phillips and colleagues seem to show that whey proteins are superior to casein and soy and that whole milk supplies all that is required for net muscle protein accretion. Although not yet proven, it seems likely to us that any high-quality protein source, such as beef, egg, or soy, will be as good as milk for muscle protein accretion

A net gain in muscle mass (MPS – MPB) after exercise is achieved only when amino acid availability is increased during the postexercise period. Approximately 20 g of high-quality protein, such as milk protein, is sufficient to elicit the maximum synthetic response and, consequently, net accretion of muscle mass.

BCAA's
In the world of amino acids, the structural “building blocks” of proteins, there are
several classes and types of aminos. For example, we have the essential amino
acids, the non-essential amino acids, the conditionally essential amino acids and
the branch chain amino acids (BCAA).
The essential amino acids are deemed as such because the body cannot
manufacture them and they must be supplied by the diet. The non-essential amino
acids can be made from the essential amino acids, and thus don't have to be
supplied by the diet for survival, though many non-essential amino acids play
essential roles in health and metabolism in their own right.
The conditionally essential amino acids, so named because during certain periods,
such as infancy or certain metabolic states, can be considered essential for that
period of time. The branch chain amino acids (so named because they branch off
another chain of atoms rather than form a straight line as other amino acids do) are
leucine, valine and iso-leucine.
The BCAA’s are the amino acids that are primarily used (oxidized) during exercise
and make up to one third of the amino acids in muscle tissue. It has been known
for a long time that BCAA’s play a critical role in the turn over of lean body
tissues (muscle) and is muscle sparing (i.e. anti-catabolic) in a variety of muscles
wasting states. Of the three BCAA, L-leucine appears to be the most important to preserving hard earned muscle mass; intense exercise and certain disease states
have been shown to eat up a great deal of L-leucine.
So far so good! On the research front, some studies have found the consumption of
BCAA before endurance exercise may decrease the rate of protein degradation and
may have a sparing effect on muscle glycogen degradation and depletion of muscle
glycogen stores.
However, leucine supplementation at 200 mg per kg of bodyweight prior to
anaerobic running exercise (sprinting) did not improve performance.
Truth is, research to date with BCAA’s and performance has been contradictory at
best. One of the major drawbacks of the BCAA’s as a supplement is dosage. It
takes very high doses to see any ergogenic effect, assuming there are any
ergogenic effects to be had, as studies are still limited and or contradictory.
Although BCAA’s supplementation may or may not be effective, it is cost
prohibitive when one factors in the amounts needed. The good news however is
that proteins, in particular whey protein, is very high in BCAA’s and this may be
yet another reason whey is the so popular with athletes and so impressive in the
research.
As amino acids relating to the functions they play in the body, they get a thumb's
up from me, but as a supplement they get a thumb's down at this time. It’s far more
cost effective to use a high BCAA content protein supplement than take BCAA’s
supplements in capsule form due to the high doses needed.

Other positive attributes associated with BCAA's as shown by current scientific literature includes: increased muscle recovery especially after intense eccentric exercise, alleviation of short term decrements in performance commonly associated with overreaching, improvements in plasma levels of BCAA's (often linked with fatigue), and may aid in the healing of injuries, sickness, and trauma. There may also be strength and muscle mass increases accompanied by BCAA supplementation.
